PERCEIVED INFLUENCES OF OFFICE ERGONOMICS ON THE JOB PERFORMANCE OF CONFIDENTIAL SECRETARIES IN GOVERNMENT MINISTRIES IN EBONYI STATE

Abstract:
This study investigates the perceived influences of office ergonomics on the job performance of confidential secretaries in government ministries in Ebonyi State. Office ergonomics refers to the design and arrangement of office equipment, furniture, and workspaces to optimize employee well-being and productivity. The job performance of confidential secretaries, who play a crucial role in ensuring effective communication and administrative support within government ministries, is influenced by various factors, including the ergonomic conditions of their work environment.

The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing semi-structured interviews and observations to gather data from a sample of confidential secretaries working in government ministries in Ebonyi State. The participants’ perceptions of office ergonomics and its impact on their job performance are explored, focusing on factors such as seating arrangement, workstation design, lighting, temperature, and noise levels.

Preliminary findings suggest that office ergonomics significantly affect the job performance of confidential secretaries. A conducive ergonomic environment was perceived to enhance productivity, reduce fatigue and discomfort, and minimize the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. Participants identified factors such as adjustable chairs, ergonomic keyboards, proper workstation layout, well-designed lighting systems, appropriate temperature control, and noise reduction measures as crucial elements for improving their job performance.

The study also highlights some challenges faced by confidential secretaries in relation to office ergonomics. These include inadequate ergonomic training, substandard office furniture, limited control over the workspace design, and inadequate attention to ergonomic considerations during office renovations or upgrades.

The findings of this study have implications for both policymakers and practitioners in Ebonyi State’s government ministries. It underscores the importance of incorporating ergonomic principles into office design and maintenance, providing ergonomic training for confidential secretaries, and fostering a culture of awareness regarding the impact of office ergonomics on job performance.

In conclusion, this research sheds light on the perceived influences of office ergonomics on the job performance of confidential secretaries in government ministries in Ebonyi State. The findings emphasize the need for proactive measures to improve office ergonomics, which can contribute to enhanced job performance, employee well-being, and overall organizational effectiveness.
