SUSTAINING TEACHING AND LEARNING OF OFFICE TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT EDUCATION IN SOUTH-EASTERN NIGERIA TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN THE NEW NORMAL ERA
Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted the traditional teaching and learning methods in higher education institutions worldwide, including South-Eastern Nigeria. The new normal era necessitates the adoption of innovative approaches to sustain the teaching and learning of Office Technology and Management (OTM) education in tertiary institutions. This abstract provides an overview of the challenges faced by South-Eastern Nigeria tertiary institutions in adapting to the new normal and proposes strategies for sustaining OTM education in this context.
The study identifies the key challenges faced by South-Eastern Nigeria tertiary institutions, including limited technological infrastructure, inadequate faculty training in online pedagogy, and the digital divide among students. These challenges hinder the effective delivery of OTM education and can negatively impact students’ learning outcomes.
To address these challenges, the study proposes several strategies. Firstly, investment in technological infrastructure, including reliable internet connectivity and access to digital devices, is crucial. This will enable both faculty and students to effectively participate in online teaching and learning activities. Secondly, comprehensive faculty training programs should be implemented to enhance their digital literacy and competence in online pedagogy. This will enable them to design and deliver engaging and interactive OTM courses in virtual environments.
Furthermore, bridging the digital divide among students is essential. Efforts should be made to provide equitable access to digital resources and ensure affordability of internet services. Scholarships or subsidies could be provided to economically disadvantaged students to ensure their active participation in online OTM education.
Collaborative partnerships between tertiary institutions, government agencies, and industry stakeholders are also recommended. These partnerships can facilitate the sharing of resources, expertise, and best practices to enhance the quality of OTM education in the new normal era.
In conclusion, sustaining the teaching and learning of Office Technology and Management education in South-Eastern Nigeria tertiary institutions during the new normal era requires a multifaceted approach. By addressing the challenges through investment in technological infrastructure, faculty training, bridging the digital divide, and fostering collaborative partnerships, institutions can ensure the continuity and quality of OTM education.
