HISTORICAL CONSCIOUSNESS AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA: THE EXPERIENCE OF NIGER DELTA COMMUNITIES

Abstract:
This abstract provides an overview of the relationship between historical consciousness and sustainable development in Nigeria, with a specific focus on the experiences of the Niger Delta communities. The Niger Delta region, located in southern Nigeria, is known for its rich oil reserves, which have played a significant role in the country’s economic development. However, the exploitation of these resources has resulted in various social, economic, and environmental challenges, leading to the emergence of a complex historical narrative that shapes the region’s consciousness.

This study aims to explore the interplay between historical consciousness and sustainable development in the Niger Delta communities. Historical consciousness refers to the collective awareness and understanding of the historical experiences, memories, and narratives that shape a community’s identity and perceptions. Sustainable development, on the other hand, emphasizes the integration of social, economic, and environmental factors to meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Through a comprehensive literature review and qualitative research methods such as interviews and focus groups, this study will examine how historical factors, including colonialism, resource exploitation, and environmental degradation, have influenced the consciousness and sustainable development efforts in the Niger Delta communities. It will also explore the role of memory, cultural heritage, and community resilience in shaping sustainable development practices and strategies.

The findings of this study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between historical consciousness and sustainable development in Nigeria, specifically in the Niger Delta region. The research will shed light on the challenges faced by these communities and provide insights into potential strategies for achieving sustainable development that takes into account the historical context and community aspirations. This study’s outcomes may inform policymakers, researchers, and development practitioners in designing more effective and culturally sensitive approaches to sustainable development within the Niger Delta and other similar contexts globally.
