PERCEPTION OF PARENTAL CHILD ABUSE AND CULT MEMBERSHIP OF ADOLESCENTS IN CROSS RIVER STATE

Abstract:
The present study investigates the perception of parental child abuse and its potential association with cult membership among adolescents in Cross River State. The aim of this research is to explore the extent to which adolescents perceive parental child abuse and its influence on their involvement in cult activities.

The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. A structured questionnaire is administered to a sample of adolescents from various schools and communities in Cross River State to assess their perceptions of parental child abuse. Additionally, in-depth interviews are conducted with a subgroup of participants to gain deeper insights into their experiences and perspectives.

The findings reveal the prevalence of parental child abuse and its impact on adolescent development. The results highlight that adolescents who perceive higher levels of parental child abuse are more likely to engage in cult activities as a coping mechanism or means of seeking protection and identity. Furthermore, the study examines various factors contributing to the association between parental child abuse and cult membership, including peer influence, societal pressures, and inadequate support systems.

Implications of the study suggest the urgent need for targeted interventions and support programs that address parental child abuse and its potential consequences among adolescents in Cross River State. Such initiatives may include educational campaigns, counseling services, and community-based interventions to raise awareness, promote healthy parenting practices, and provide alternative avenues for adolescent self-expression and support. Additionally, the findings call for policy changes and enforcement to protect children’s rights, strengthen child protection systems, and foster a safe and nurturing environment for their overall well-being.

The study contributes to the existing literature on child abuse, adolescent development, and cult membership, particularly within the Cross River State context. It underscores the importance of understanding the linkages between parental child abuse and cult engagement to inform prevention and intervention strategies that effectively address the needs of at-risk adolescents and promote their healthy development.
