THE DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF BIOMIMETIC BIPOLAR PROSTHESIS FOR HIP ARTHOPLASTY

ABSTRACT

Hip replacement or arthroplasty is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant. Hip replacement surgery can be performed as a total replacement or a hemi (half) replacement.  Such joint replacement surgery is generally conducted to relieve arthritis pain or in some hip fractures. Hemi-arthroplasty is a surgical procedure that replaces half of the hip joint with a hip prosthesis (an artificial device or implant) while leaving the other half intact. This work centers on the design and fabrication of biomimetic bipolar prosthesis. Thus, this work used readily available materials like stainless steel and polytetrafluoroethylene that are less costly to design and fabricate this bipolar prosthesis and also tries to reduce the rate of polyethylene wear through this design. Bipolar hemi-arthroplasty seems to produce better results compared to unipolar and has displayed a later onset of acetabular erosion compared to unipolar hemiarthroplasty. This work also critically reviewed the various types of arthroplasty with their respective advantages, disadvantages and the need for recommending bipolar hemiarthroplasty judging from the critical analysis and review of literature. There is less complication with the use of Bipolar Prosthesis than with other hip prostheses, it is userfriendly and eradicates complications like osteolysis, acetabular wear through the provision of inter-prosthetic joint or in-built.
