A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS IN URBAN AND RURAL LGAS IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA.

Abstract

This study was a cross – sectional comparative study carried out in July 2007 to determine and compare the nutritional status of primary school pupils in urban and rural local government areas in Lagos State, Nigeria, and also to assess the determinants of their nutritional status.
A multistage sampling method was adopted. One ward was selected from each local government area by simple random sampling; the studied schools were then selected from each ward by simple random sampling. Information was collected with the aid of a questionnaire. The weight and height recorded for each pupil in pre-designed proforma were converted to nutritional indices: weight for age, weight for height and height for age.
The prevalent rates of underweight, stunting and wasting in the rural area were 49.6%, 50.8% and 24.2% respectively; and 15.1%, 16.6% and 13.6% in the urban area respectively. There was also overnutrition in the urban area: 15.1% were overweight and 13.2% were obese. The mean nutritional indices were significantly lower among the rural pupils than urban pupils (p<0.001) in each case. Mother’s occupation; ownership of cars, generators and airconditioners; diet and duration of physical activity were found to be associated with nutritional status. This study showed that undernutrition is still a major health problem among school children in Lagos State, Nigeria, more so in the rural area; with the emergence of overweight and obesity in the urban area. It recommended a comprehensive nutritional education programme with emphasis on good nutrition as part of a well funded and adequately supervised school health programme.
