WEATHER IMPACT ON GUINEA CORN PRODUCTION IN IGABI, KADUNA, NIGERIA
Abstract:
Guinea corn, a significant cereal crop cultivated extensively in Nigeria, serves as a crucial staple food, especially in the northern region of the country. Escalating temperatures have been linked to reduced agricultural output, posing risks of soil nutrient depletion, soil structure degradation, and soil organism disruption – all vital components contributing to soil fertility. This research investigates the influence of weather conditions on guinea corn production within the Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Nigeria. Employing a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the study incorporates the utilization of the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Diurnal Temperature Range (DTR). The outcomes reveal a substantial positive correlation between temperature and guinea corn yield, with a correlation coefficient of 0.74, as well as a robust positive relationship between rainfall and guinea corn yield, with a correlation coefficient of 0.117. The analysis of the study area’s mean maximum temperature trend throughout the study period depicts considerable variability, characterized by fluctuations. Notably, the lowest temperature was recorded in 2011 at a total of 11804.00C, averaging 32.30C, while the highest temperature occurred in 2009 and 2013, reaching a total of 12488.90C and an average of 34.40C. The study concludes that both rainfall and temperature in the study area, during the investigated period and in recent years, have exhibited inconsistent fluctuations, significantly impacting guinea corn yields. As a recommendation, the establishment of climate monitoring stations for each agricultural zone in Nigeria is advised, accompanied by periodic awareness campaigns addressing the underlying causes of climate change across different regions of the country.
