MOBILE-BASED TUTORING SYSTEM IN DISTANCE LEARNING: THE CASE OF LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY

ABSTRACT

Mobile technology has emerged as a transformative force in the realm of education and training, particularly in its capacity to facilitate distance learning. Its potential is especially pronounced in regions with limited information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure and internet connectivity. Despite the undeniable significance of mobile technology, there is a noticeable dearth of research in the Ethiopian context regarding its application in distance learning, particularly in the provision of tutorial services. This thesis is motivated by the need to address this research gap and aims to develop a mobile-based tutorial framework tailored to support distance learners in Nigeria, with Lagos State University serving as a case study. To achieve this, a comprehensive research approach, encompassing both qualitative and quantitative case study research methods, has been employed. These methods are designed to gain a deep understanding of the existing distance learning landscape, identify pertinent challenges and issues, and ascertain the requirements necessary for the development of an effective system. The data collection process relied on interviews and questionnaires as primary tools. These methods allowed for the identification of problems and requirements through a combination of qualitative insights and quantitative data. The findings of this empirical study have revealed key challenges faced by distance learners at Lagos State University. These challenges include issues such as missing tutorial sessions, limitations in the expertise and experience of tutors, a lack of practical application of theoretical knowledge, and deficiencies in the quality of tutorial materials. Importantly, the results validate the potential of a mobile-based tutorial system in addressing these challenges. Such a system is found to be user-friendly, time-efficient, cost-effective in the delivery of tutorial services, and a motivating factor for distance learners to engage more actively in tutorials
