THE ROLE OF ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY IN SUPPORTING STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES IN NIGERIAN SCHOOLS: A CASE STUDY.

ABSTRACT

This case study examines the integration and impact of assistive technology in addressing the diverse learning needs of students with learning disabilities in Nigerian schools. Acknowledging the potential of technology to enhance educational experiences, this research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining assessments, teacher interviews, and classroom observations. The study encompasses a diverse sample of students with learning disabilities, attending various educational settings across different regions in Nigeria. Findings demonstrate that the incorporation of assistive technology significantly enhances access to education and promotes active engagement for students with learning disabilities. Tailored assistive tools and technologies, including specialized software, text-to-speech applications, and digital organizers, empower students to overcome learning barriers and participate fully in the educational process. The study also underscores the importance of proper training and ongoing support for educators and students in utilizing assistive technology effectively. However, the research also uncovers challenges in the provision of assistive technology, including limited access to specialized devices and software, the need for targeted training for educators, and considerations for affordability and infrastructure. Additionally, cultural perspectives and attitudes towards learning disabilities and technology may influence the acceptance and utilization of assistive technology within the Nigerian educational context. The findings of this case study have significant implications for inclusive education policy and practice in Nigeria. Recommendations are provided for the further development and integration of assistive technology initiatives, emphasizing increased investment in technology resources, professional development for educators, and community awareness campaigns to promote understanding and support for assistive technology. This research contributes to the broader discourse on inclusive education and the empowerment of students with learning disabilities. By showcasing the effectiveness of assistive technology within the Nigerian context, this study advocates for the widespread adoption and integration of evidence-based practices to create inclusive learning environments. The insights gleaned from this case study can serve as a foundation for further research and inform best practices in supporting students with learning disabilities not only in Nigeria but also in diverse global educational contexts.
