THE ROLE OF BACKYARD FARMING FOR THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN IN NIGERIA

Abstract:
This abstract highlights the importance of backyard farming in Nigeria as a means of socio-economic empowerment for women. Nigeria, like many other developing countries, faces numerous challenges related to women’s empowerment, including limited access to education, financial resources, and economic opportunities. Backyard farming, which refers to small-scale agricultural activities carried out in residential areas, has emerged as a viable solution to empower women and improve their socio-economic status.

The study explores the key role of backyard farming in addressing gender disparities and promoting women’s empowerment in Nigeria. It examines the socio-economic benefits of backyard farming, such as increased household income, improved food security, and enhanced nutritional well-being. The study also investigates the various challenges faced by women in engaging in backyard farming, including limited access to land, lack of technical skills, and inadequate support services.

To achieve the objectives of the study, a mixed-methods approach is employed, combining qualitative interviews with women engaged in backyard farming and quantitative analysis of socio-economic indicators. The findings reveal that backyard farming offers women an opportunity to generate income, gain financial independence, and contribute to household livelihoods. It also provides a platform for skill development, knowledge sharing, and social empowerment within communities.

The study further highlights the importance of supportive policies and interventions to enhance the impact of backyard farming on women’s empowerment. These include improving access to land, providing training and capacity-building programs, facilitating access to finance and markets, and promoting gender-sensitive agricultural policies.

In conclusion, backyard farming holds significant potential for the socio-economic empowerment of women in Nigeria. By addressing gender disparities, enhancing economic opportunities, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices, backyard farming can contribute to poverty reduction, food security, and gender equality. Policy-makers, development practitioners, and stakeholders should recognize and support the role of backyard farming in advancing women’s empowerment and overall socio-economic development in Nigeria.
