Abstract:
This study explores the sex role orientation among student counsellors in Lagos Metropolis, Nigeria. Sex role orientation refers to the degree to which individuals adhere to traditional gender roles and expectations. Understanding the sex role orientation of student counsellors is crucial as it can influence their perceptions, attitudes, and effectiveness in providing guidance and support to students.

The research employed a quantitative approach, utilizing a survey questionnaire as the primary data collection instrument. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select a sample of student counsellors from various educational institutions in Lagos Metropolis. The questionnaire consisted of demographic information and the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI), which measures individuals' masculinity, femininity, and androgyny.

Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and inferential statistics such as t-tests and ANOVA. The findings revealed the sex role orientation of student counsellors, including their adherence to traditional gender roles and the presence of androgynous characteristics. The results also explored potential relationships between sex role orientation and demographic variables such as age, educational background, and years of experience.

The study's implications suggest that student counsellors' sex role orientation may influence their counseling approaches and interactions with students. By understanding their own gender-related beliefs and biases, counsellors can provide more inclusive and effective guidance and support to students, regardless of their gender identity or expression.

Future research in this area could focus on examining the impact of sex role orientation on counseling outcomes and student well-being. Additionally, qualitative research methods could supplement the quantitative findings by exploring the experiences, perceptions, and challenges faced by student counsellors in relation to their sex role orientation.
