Abstract:

This study examines the production and utilization of skills-oriented graduates by assessing the utilization of instructional materials by newly trained teachers in selected senior secondary schools in Lagos, Nigeria. The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of teacher training programs in equipping educators with the necessary skills to effectively utilize instructional materials in the classroom and enhance student learning outcomes.

The research methodology employed in this study is a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A sample of newly trained teachers and school administrators from selected senior secondary schools in Lagos was selected for data collection. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while the qualitative data were subjected to thematic analysis.

The findings of this study reveal the current state of instructional material utilization by newly trained teachers in senior secondary schools in Lagos. It explores the challenges faced by teachers in accessing and effectively utilizing instructional materials, as well as the factors influencing their utilization. The study also examines the impact of instructional material utilization on student engagement, comprehension, and overall academic performance.

The results of the study have implications for educational policymakers, teacher training institutions, and school administrators. It highlights the importance of incorporating practical and skills-oriented training programs for teachers, ensuring they are adequately equipped to utilize instructional materials effectively. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the need for increased investment in the provision of instructional materials and resources in schools, as well as the development of supportive frameworks for their utilization.

In conclusion, this study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the production and utilization of skills-oriented graduates in the Nigerian education system. By assessing the utilization of instructional materials by newly trained teachers, it sheds light on the challenges and opportunities associated with effective material utilization. The findings of this study can inform evidence-based policies and interventions aimed at improving the quality of education and enhancing student learning outcomes in senior secondary schools in Lagos and beyond.
