Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic, which emerged in late 2019 and quickly spread across the globe, posed significant challenges to education and awareness creation in Nigeria. In response, the radio network emerged as a strategic medium to disseminate information and promote education and awareness during this unprecedented era. This study provides a historical perspective on the role of radio in Nigeria from 1956 to 2020, particularly focusing on its significance as a medium for education and awareness creation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing archival data, documentary analysis, and interviews with key stakeholders in the radio industry. The study examines the evolution of radio in Nigeria, highlighting its importance as a mass communication tool and its ability to reach remote and underserved communities, making it an effective medium for education and awareness campaigns.
The historical analysis reveals that radio has played a crucial role in Nigeria's communication landscape, providing access to information, entertainment, and education. During the COVID-19 pandemic, radio stations became vital sources of credible information, providing updates on preventive measures, government policies, and public health guidelines. Educational programs, including school lessons and interactive sessions, were broadcasted to support remote learning for students who were unable to attend physical classes.
Additionally, radio programs served as a platform for raising awareness about COVID-19, dispelling myths and misconceptions, and promoting behavior change. Talk shows, interviews with health experts, and community engagement initiatives facilitated the dissemination of accurate information and encouraged public participation in curbing the spread of the virus.
The findings suggest that the radio network, with its wide coverage and accessibility, bridged the digital divide and ensured that vital information reached all segments of the Nigerian population, including those in rural and marginalized areas. The historical perspective provided in this study helps to understand the legacy and impact of radio as a strategic medium of education and awareness creation during times of crisis.
This research contributes to the body of knowledge on the role of mass media in public health emergencies and underscores the importance of investing in radio infrastructure and content production for effective communication and education. It highlights the need for policymakers and stakeholders to recognize radio as a critical tool for education, awareness creation, and community mobilization, particularly in resource-constrained settings.
