Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between cognitive skills and academic achievement among senior secondary school students in Education District II of Lagos State. Cognitive skills play a crucial role in a student's ability to acquire, process, and retain knowledge, thus influencing their academic performance. The study employed a quantitative research design, using a correlational approach to examine the predictive power of cognitive skills on academic achievement.

The sample consisted of senior secondary school students from various schools within Education District II of Lagos State. Data on cognitive skills were collected using standardized cognitive tests, while academic achievement was measured using students' cumulative grade point average (CGPA). Statistical analyses, including correlation and regression analysis, were conducted to analyze the data.

The findings revealed a significant positive correlation between cognitive skills and academic achievement among senior secondary school students. The cognitive skills tested, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, memory, and attention, were found to be significant predictors of academic achievement. Specifically, students with higher cognitive skills tended to perform better academically compared to those with lower cognitive skills.

These findings have significant implications for educational policymakers, school administrators, and teachers in Education District II of Lagos State. It highlights the importance of integrating cognitive skill development programs into the curriculum to enhance students' academic achievement. By providing targeted interventions that foster the development of cognitive skills, educators can better prepare students to succeed academically.

Based on the results of this study, future research can explore the effectiveness of specific instructional strategies that promote cognitive skill development and further investigate the role of other factors, such as socioeconomic status and motivation, in relation to academic achievement. Such knowledge can contribute to the implementation of evidence-based educational practices that support students' cognitive development and academic success.
