Abstract:
Examination malpractice is a pervasive issue in the education system, posing a significant challenge to maintaining academic integrity and fairness. This study aims to explore the types and levels of involvement in examination malpractice as perceived by undergraduates in Gombe State University, Nigeria. By understanding the students' perspectives, this research intends to shed light on the underlying factors contributing to examination malpractice and provide insights for developing effective strategies to address this problem.
The study employs a quantitative research design, utilizing a self-administered questionnaire to collect data from a sample of undergraduate students in Gombe State University. The questionnaire includes items that assess the students' perceptions of different types of examination malpractice, such as cheating, collusion, impersonation, and plagiarism. Additionally, the questionnaire measures the perceived levels of involvement in these malpractices, ranging from low to high.
Preliminary findings indicate that the majority of undergraduates are aware of the various types of examination malpractice. Cheating, including copying from other students or unauthorized materials, emerges as the most prevalent form of malpractice. Collusion, where students collaborate to cheat, and impersonation, where individuals substitute for another student during an examination, are also reported to occur. However, plagiarism appears to be less prevalent among the surveyed undergraduates.
Furthermore, the perceived levels of involvement in examination malpractice vary among the participants. Some students acknowledge engaging in malpractice to a limited extent, while others express little or no involvement. Factors influencing students' engagement in malpractice include academic pressure, lack of preparedness, competition for grades, and inadequate invigilation during examinations.
The implications of this study suggest a need for a multifaceted approach to tackle examination malpractice. Efforts should be directed towards enhancing academic integrity through educational interventions, such as promoting ethical conduct, fostering a supportive learning environment, and strengthening invigilation practices. Additionally, addressing the underlying causes of malpractice, such as academic pressure and competition, can help mitigate its occurrence.
This study contributes to the existing literature on examination malpractice by providing insights into the perspectives of undergraduates in Gombe State University. The findings can inform policymakers, educators, and administrators in developing targeted interventions to combat examination malpractice effectively. Future research is recommended to explore the effectiveness of different strategies in reducing malpractice and to extend the investigation to other institutions and regions for a comprehensive understanding of this issue.
