Abstract:
The aim of this study was to assess the perception of commercial drivers regarding road safety education and its impact on their compliance with road traffic rules and regulations in Delta State. Road traffic accidents are a significant public health concern globally, and commercial drivers play a crucial role in road safety. This study sought to understand the effectiveness of road safety education programs in influencing commercial drivers' behavior and promoting compliance with road traffic rules and regulations.
A mixed-methods approach was employed, consisting of both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A sample of 250 commercial drivers was selected using a stratified random sampling technique from various motor parks in Delta State. The survey questionnaire included items related to drivers' perception of road safety education, knowledge of road traffic rules and regulations, and their compliance behaviors. Additionally, in-depth interviews were conducted with a subset of participants to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences and perspectives.
The findings revealed that the majority of commercial drivers had received some form of road safety education, mostly through driver training programs and awareness campaigns organized by government agencies and non-governmental organizations. However, despite this exposure, there were gaps in knowledge and understanding of specific road traffic rules and regulations, particularly those related to speed limits, seat belt usage, and alcohol-impaired driving.
While the drivers recognized the importance of road safety education in promoting compliance, various factors such as inadequate enforcement, poor road infrastructure, and time constraints were identified as barriers to full compliance. Additionally, the study highlighted the need for continuous and targeted road safety education interventions, incorporating practical demonstrations, interactive sessions, and regular refresher courses.
Based on the findings, recommendations were made to enhance the effectiveness of road safety education programs for commercial drivers in Delta State. These included strengthening enforcement mechanisms, improving road infrastructure, and developing comprehensive and context-specific educational materials. Furthermore, collaboration between government agencies, transport unions, and relevant stakeholders was emphasized to ensure sustainable and long-term improvements in road safety outcomes.
In conclusion, this study underscores the importance of road safety education in promoting compliance with road traffic rules and regulations among commercial drivers. It provides insights into the drivers' perception of road safety education and identifies areas for improvement in the design and implementation of educational interventions. The findings contribute to the body of knowledge on road safety and can inform policies and practices aimed at reducing road traffic accidents in Delta State and similar contexts.
