Abstract:
The effective teaching and learning of computer studies in secondary schools depend significantly on the availability and utilization of appropriate instructional materials. This study aims to investigate the availability and utilization of instructional materials in teaching computer studies in secondary schools in Gwandu Metropolis, Kebbi State.

The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A survey questionnaire was administered to computer studies teachers in selected secondary schools to gather quantitative data on the availability and utilization of instructional materials. Additionally, interviews and observations were conducted to obtain qualitative data and provide deeper insights into the issue.

The findings revealed that there are several challenges related to the availability and utilization of instructional materials in teaching computer studies. The study found that a significant number of secondary schools in Gwandu Metropolis lack adequate instructional materials for teaching computer studies, including computers, software, textbooks, and multimedia resources. Insufficient funding, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of technical expertise were identified as major barriers to the procurement and maintenance of these materials.

Despite these challenges, the study also identified various strategies employed by computer studies teachers to overcome the limitations. Teachers resorted to improvisation, such as using printed materials, diagrams, and practical demonstrations to enhance teaching and learning experiences. Furthermore, some schools collaborated with local communities, non-governmental organizations, and government agencies to acquire necessary instructional materials.

Based on the findings, this study recommends that relevant stakeholders, including the government, school administrators, and policymakers, prioritize the provision of adequate funding and support for the procurement and maintenance of instructional materials in computer studies. Additionally, teacher training programs should be implemented to enhance teachers' technical competencies and promote innovative teaching methodologies.

In conclusion, the availability and utilization of instructional materials in teaching computer studies in secondary schools in Gwandu Metropolis, Kebbi State face significant challenges. However, the study highlights the resourcefulness of teachers and the potential for collaboration between schools and external stakeholders to mitigate these challenges. By addressing these issues, the quality of computer studies education in secondary schools can be improved, enabling students to develop the necessary skills for the digital age.
