Abstract:
Conflict is an inevitable aspect of human interaction, and its effective management is crucial for maintaining harmonious relationships within organizations. In the context of tertiary institutions in Nigeria, conflict management is particularly important for business education staff who play a key role in shaping the future business leaders of the nation. This study aims to explore the relationship-perceived strategies employed by business education staff in Nigerian tertiary institutions to manage conflicts effectively.
The research utilizes a qualitative approach, employing interviews and focus group discussions with business education staff members from various tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The study investigates the experiences, perceptions, and strategies employed by the participants in dealing with conflicts within their professional relationships.
Preliminary findings suggest that business education staff in Nigerian tertiary institutions employ a range of relationship-perceived strategies to manage conflicts effectively. These strategies include effective communication, active listening, empathy, negotiation, compromise, and collaboration. The participants emphasized the importance of maintaining open lines of communication, fostering mutual understanding, and seeking common ground as essential elements in conflict resolution.
Furthermore, the study reveals that the cultural context of Nigeria significantly influences conflict management strategies. Participants highlighted the significance of cultural sensitivity and adaptability in addressing conflicts, considering the diverse backgrounds and values of the stakeholders involved.
The findings of this research contribute to the existing literature on conflict management in educational institutions, particularly within the Nigerian context. The identified relationship-perceived strategies provide valuable insights for business education staff, administrators, and policymakers in tertiary institutions, enabling them to develop proactive measures for conflict prevention and resolution.
The study concludes by recommending the integration of conflict management training and workshops for business education staff in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. By equipping staff with effective conflict resolution skills and promoting a culture of open communication and collaboration, institutions can foster positive work environments and enhance the overall quality of business education.
