Abstract:
The misuse and abuse of drugs and substances among undergraduates is a growing concern worldwide, as it poses significant risks to the health, well-being, and academic performance of students. This study focuses on investigating the prevalence of drug and substance abuse among undergraduates at the University of Lagos and explores the implications for implementing campus-wide counseling programs.

A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The sample consisted of undergraduate students from various faculties and disciplines within the University of Lagos. The survey questionnaire collected data on demographics, drug and substance use patterns, reasons for use, and perceived consequences. Additionally, in-depth interviews were conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences and perspectives of the participants.

The findings revealed a notable prevalence of drug and substance abuse among the undergraduate population at the University of Lagos. The most commonly abused substances included alcohol, cannabis, stimulants, and prescription medications. Students reported various motivations for drug use, including stress reduction, peer pressure, experimentation, and academic performance enhancement. The consequences of drug abuse ranged from physical and mental health problems to academic underachievement and strained relationships.

These findings underscore the urgent need for the implementation of campus-wide counseling programs targeting drug and substance abuse among undergraduate students. The university should establish comprehensive prevention and intervention strategies that encompass education, awareness campaigns, counseling services, and support networks. Moreover, collaboration with relevant stakeholders, such as faculty members, parents, and healthcare professionals, is crucial for the success of these programs.

By providing accessible and confidential counseling services, the university can create a supportive environment that encourages students to seek help and address their substance abuse issues. Additionally, preventive measures aimed at fostering a healthy campus culture and promoting alternative coping mechanisms should be integrated into the curriculum and extracurricular activities.

In conclusion, this study highlights the prevalence of drug and substance abuse among undergraduates in the University of Lagos and emphasizes the need for campus-wide counseling programs. By addressing this issue comprehensively, the university can contribute to the overall well-being and academic success of its students, fostering a healthier and more productive campus community.
