Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate the factors influencing reading habits and their impact on the perceived academic performance of students in Federal College of Forestry, Jos, Plateau State. Reading habits play a crucial role in shaping students' educational outcomes and preparing them for academic success. This research aimed to identify the key factors that influence reading habits among students and examine the relationship between reading habits and perceived academic performance.
A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining both qualitative and quantitative research methods. A structured questionnaire was administered to a sample of students from different departments and levels within the college, and in-depth interviews were conducted with a subset of participants to gather additional insights. The questionnaire assessed various factors that can potentially influence reading habits, including access to reading materials, motivation, study environment, time management, and technological distractions.
Preliminary findings indicated that access to reading materials, both physical and digital, significantly influenced students' reading habits. Students who had easy access to a variety of reading materials, such as textbooks, journals, and online resources, demonstrated more frequent and extensive reading habits. Motivation was identified as another critical factor, as students who had intrinsic motivation, a sense of purpose, and clear goals were more likely to develop regular reading habits.
Moreover, the study revealed that the study environment played a crucial role in shaping reading habits. Students who had conducive study environments, characterized by minimal distractions and comfortable seating arrangements, were more likely to engage in focused and sustained reading. Effective time management skills were also found to positively correlate with reading habits, with students who effectively allocated time for reading reporting higher levels of academic performance.
However, technological distractions, such as social media and online entertainment, emerged as significant barriers to developing consistent reading habits. Students who spent excessive time on digital platforms, engaging in non-academic activities, were more likely to have poor reading habits and lower perceived academic performance.
These findings highlight the importance of addressing various factors that influence reading habits among students. Educational institutions should focus on ensuring easy access to a wide range of reading materials, fostering intrinsic motivation, providing conducive study environments, and promoting effective time management strategies. Additionally, efforts should be made to minimize technological distractions and encourage students to develop self-regulation skills to enhance their reading habits and overall academic performance.
