Abstract:
Marital distress is a significant concern affecting couples worldwide, including Christian couples in Cape Coast Metropolis, Ghana. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of two therapeutic approaches, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Integrative Behavioural Couple Therapy (IBCT), in reducing marital distress among Christian couples.
A mixed-methods research design was employed, combining quantitative measures and qualitative interviews. A sample of 100 Christian couples experiencing marital distress was randomly assigned to either a CBT group, an IBCT group, or a control group. Pre- and post-intervention assessments were conducted using reliable and validated measures of marital distress, including the Marital Satisfaction Scale and the Dyadic Adjustment Scale.
The results of the quantitative analysis revealed that both CBT and IBCT significantly reduced marital distress compared to the control group. The CBT group showed a significant improvement in marital satisfaction (p < 0.001), with a moderate effect size (d = 0.60). Similarly, the IBCT group demonstrated a significant improvement in marital satisfaction (p < 0.001), with a large effect size (d = 0.83).
The qualitative analysis provided additional insights into the experiences of couples who underwent CBT or IBCT. Themes that emerged included enhanced communication skills, increased understanding of each other's perspectives, and improved conflict resolution strategies. Participants reported that the therapeutic interventions helped them develop a stronger spiritual bond and a deeper connection in their relationship.
The findings of this study suggest that both CBT and IBCT can be effective interventions for reducing marital distress among Christian couples in Cape Coast Metropolis, Ghana. These therapeutic approaches offer valuable techniques and strategies to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen the spiritual dimension of the relationship. Mental health professionals and couples' counselors are encouraged to consider implementing CBT and IBCT as part of their therapeutic repertoire to address marital distress among Christian couples effectively. Further research is warranted to explore the long-term effects and generalizability of these interventions in diverse cultural and religious contexts.
