PEDAGOGICAL SKILLS NEEDED FOR EFFECTIVE ONLINE TEACHING AND LEARNING IN POLYTECHNICS

ABSTRACT

This research project aims to explore the pedagogical skills required for effective online teaching and learning in polytechnics. The study seeks to identify the essential competencies and strategies that educators need to possess to facilitate engaging and successful online learning experiences in polytechnic institutions.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, combining surveys, interviews, and observation of online teaching practices. The research objectives include identifying the pedagogical skills necessary for effective online teaching and learning, assessing the current level of proficiency among educators in polytechnics, exploring the challenges encountered in developing and implementing these skills, and proposing strategies for enhancing pedagogical practices in online education.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the pedagogical skills needed for effective online teaching and learning in polytechnics. The research will identify essential competencies such as instructional design for online environments, effective communication and facilitation, learner engagement and motivation strategies, assessment and feedback techniques, and the ability to foster a supportive online learning community. Additionally, the research will assess the current level of proficiency among educators in these skills, considering factors such as training opportunities, professional development initiatives, and institutional support. Furthermore, the research will explore the challenges encountered in developing and implementing these pedagogical skills, including technological barriers, time constraints, and resistance to change. The research will also propose strategies for enhancing pedagogical practices in online education, such as providing comprehensive training and support for educators, integrating instructional design principles into course development, promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing among educators, and leveraging technology tools and resources.

The implications of this research extend to polytechnic institutions, educators, administrators, and policymakers. The findings will inform polytechnic institutions about the pedagogical skills necessary for effective online teaching and learning, guiding them in developing training programs and support structures to enhance educators’ competencies. Educators can utilize the research findings to assess their own pedagogical skills and identify areas for improvement, leading to more effective online teaching practices. Administrators can benefit from the research findings by understanding the challenges faced by educators and implementing strategies to address them, fostering a conducive online learning environment. Policymakers can consider the implications of the research when formulating policies and initiatives that support the development and implementation of pedagogical skills in online education.
