Abstract:
This abstract provides a summary of the challenges surrounding the teaching and learning of English as a second language in secondary schools within Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State. The study focuses on identifying the key issues that hinder effective English language instruction and acquisition in this particular educational setting.
English language proficiency plays a crucial role in enhancing communication skills, academic achievement, and socioeconomic opportunities. However, many students in Ankpa Local Government Area struggle to attain proficiency in English, which hampers their overall educational development and future prospects.
This research aims to investigate the factors contributing to the problem of teaching and learning English as a second language in secondary schools within Ankpa Local Government Area. It explores various elements such as instructional methods, curriculum design, teacher qualifications, availability of instructional resources, and students' socio-cultural background.
The study employs a mixed-methods approach, including surveys, interviews, and classroom observations, to collect data from teachers, students, and relevant stakeholders.
