Abstract:
The advent of social media has brought about significant changes in various aspects of human life, including education. This study investigates the influence of social media on students' academic performance in Lagos Metropolis. The study aims to explore the extent to which social media usage affects students' academic achievements and to identify potential factors that mediate or moderate this relationship.
A mixed-methods approach was employed to collect data from a sample of students enrolled in secondary schools and tertiary institutions in Lagos Metropolis. Quantitative data were collected through a structured survey questionnaire, while qualitative data were obtained through focus group discussions and interviews. The survey questionnaire assessed students' social media usage patterns, academic performance, and perceived impacts of social media on their studies. The qualitative data provided deeper insights into students' experiences, perceptions, and behaviors related to social media usage.
Preliminary findings indicate that social media usage among students in Lagos Metropolis is widespread and diverse, with platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and WhatsApp being the most frequently used. The study revealed both positive and negative effects of social media on students' academic performance. Positive effects included enhanced access to information, collaborative learning opportunities, and improved communication with peers and educators. However, negative effects were also observed, such as increased distraction, reduced study time, and academic procrastination.
In addition, the study identified several mediating and moderating factors that influence the relationship between social media usage and academic performance. These factors include self-regulation skills, time management strategies, technological literacy, and parental guidance. Students who demonstrated effective self-regulation skills and employed appropriate time management strategies were found to mitigate the negative impacts of social media on their academic performance.
The findings of this study have implications for educational institutions, policymakers, parents, and students themselves. It highlights the need for promoting digital literacy skills, self-regulation strategies, and effective time management techniques among students. Educational institutions can design interventions and programs that educate students about responsible social media usage, emphasizing the importance of balancing online activities with academic commitments.
Overall, this study contributes to the growing body of research on the influence of social media on students' academic performance. By providing insights into the specific context of Lagos Metropolis, it offers valuable information for educators and stakeholders to understand and address the challenges associated with social media use among students, ultimately promoting their academic success and well-being.
