Abstract:
Gender equality is a fundamental human right and a key driver for sustainable development. In Nigeria, as in many other countries, achieving gender equality in education remains a significant challenge, particularly at the secondary school level. This abstract highlights the importance of managing gender equality in Nigerian secondary schools through innovative education to facilitate the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This study examines the current state of gender equality in Nigerian secondary schools and explores the role of innovative education in addressing the existing gaps. It focuses on how innovative educational strategies can promote gender parity, empower girls, and foster an inclusive learning environment that supports the attainment of SDGs.

The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis to gather data from students, teachers, school administrators, and policymakers. The study identifies key barriers to gender equality, including cultural norms, societal expectations, limited access to educational resources, and gender-based violence.

To manage gender equality effectively, the study proposes innovative educational interventions such as:

  1. Gender-sensitive curriculum: Developing a curriculum that addresses gender stereotypes, promotes gender equality, and highlights the contributions of women in various fields.
  2. Teacher training: Providing comprehensive training programs for teachers to enhance their understanding of gender issues and equip them with pedagogical strategies to create an inclusive learning environment.
  3. Infrastructure improvement: Ensuring schools have gender-friendly facilities, including separate sanitation facilities for boys and girls, safe spaces, and accessible infrastructure to accommodate students with disabilities.
  4. Community engagement: Collaborating with parents, community leaders, and other stakeholders to challenge gender biases, raise awareness about the importance of gender equality, and promote girls' education.
  5. Mentorship and career guidance: Implementing mentorship programs and career guidance initiatives that encourage girls to pursue non-traditional fields and empower them to make informed choices about their future.

The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature on managing gender equality in Nigerian secondary schools and provide practical recommendations for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders to foster an inclusive and equitable learning environment. By implementing innovative educational interventions, Nigeria can make significant strides towards achieving SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality), ultimately fostering sustainable development and creating a more just and equal society.
