ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND THE FORMATION OF STUDENTS’ ENTREPRENEURIAL INTENTIONS: PERSPECTIVES FROM ZAMBIA
Abstract:
Entrepreneurship plays a pivotal role in fostering economic growth, innovation, and job creation in developing countries like Zambia. Understanding the factors that influence students' entrepreneurial intentions is crucial for fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and nurturing future entrepreneurs. This study explores the relationship between environmental factors and the formation of students' entrepreneurial intentions, focusing specifically on perspectives from Zambia.
The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. The study sample consists of university students from various disciplines across Zambia, providing a diverse representation of the student population. The quantitative data is analyzed using statistical techniques, including regression analysis, while qualitative data is subjected to thematic analysis.
The environmental factors examined include socio-cultural, educational, economic, and institutional aspects that shape the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Zambia. Socio-cultural factors encompass societal norms, cultural values, and role models that influence students' perception of entrepreneurship. Educational factors explore the impact of entrepreneurship education, curriculum design, and pedagogical approaches on students' intentions to start a business.
Economic factors consider the availability of financial resources, access to markets, and the presence of entrepreneurial opportunities. Institutional factors analyze the role of government policies, regulations, and support programs in facilitating or hindering entrepreneurial activities. The study also investigates the mediating effects of entrepreneurial self-efficacy and perceived desirability on the relationship between environmental factors and entrepreneurial intentions.
The findings of this research contribute to the existing literature on entrepreneurship and provide valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and other stakeholders involved in fostering entrepreneurial ecosystems. The study's results will inform the development of targeted interventions and policies to enhance students' entrepreneurial intentions in Zambia. By understanding the specific environmental factors that influence entrepreneurial intentions, policymakers can design strategies to create a conducive environment for entrepreneurship and promote sustainable economic development.
