AWARENESS AND ADOPTION OF SOCIAL MEDIA TOOLS BY LIBRARIANS FOR KNOWLEDGE SHARING IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN SOUTH-SOUTH NIGERIA: AN OVERVIEW.

Abstract:
This paper presents an overview of the awareness and adoption of social media tools by librarians for knowledge sharing in university libraries in the South-South region of Nigeria. In recent years, social media platforms have emerged as powerful tools for communication, collaboration, and information sharing. This study aims to examine the extent to which librarians in university libraries in South-South Nigeria are aware of and utilize social media tools for knowledge sharing purposes.

The research methodology employed in this study is a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data was collected through surveys, interviews, and observations conducted among librarians working in university libraries across the South-South region. The study investigates the level of awareness among librarians regarding various social media platforms and their understanding of the potential benefits of using these tools for knowledge sharing.

Preliminary findings indicate that while librarians in South-South Nigeria are generally aware of popular social media platforms, there is a significant variation in their level of adoption and utilization for knowledge sharing purposes. Factors such as limited access to technology, inadequate training, and concerns regarding privacy and security are identified as barriers to the widespread adoption of social media tools among librarians.

The study further explores the challenges faced by librarians in integrating social media tools into their professional practices and identifies potential strategies for enhancing their awareness and adoption. These strategies include targeted training programs, provision of adequate technological infrastructure, and the development of policies and guidelines for the responsible use of social media in library settings.

The findings of this study have implications for university libraries in South-South Nigeria and other similar contexts. By understanding the current state of awareness and adoption of social media tools among librarians, library administrators can develop interventions to enhance knowledge sharing practices, improve information dissemination, and strengthen collaboration among library professionals.

Overall, this study contributes to the existing literature on social media adoption in library settings and provides insights into the specific challenges and opportunities faced by librarians in South-South Nigeria. The results can inform the development of strategies to leverage social media tools effectively for knowledge sharing and professional development in university libraries.
