EXPLORING THE USE OF INDIGENOUS BUILDING MATERIALS TO ACHIEVE THERMAL COMFORT IN A HOT, HUMID CLIMATE: THE CASE OF SOUTH EASTERN NIGERIA.

Abstract:
In hot and humid climates, achieving thermal comfort in buildings poses significant challenges due to the region's climatic conditions. Traditional building materials, rooted in the local environment and indigenous knowledge, have historically provided effective solutions for thermal comfort in such regions. This paper focuses on exploring the use of indigenous building materials to enhance thermal comfort in the context of South Eastern Nigeria, which experiences high temperatures and humidity levels throughout the year.

The study combines literature review, field surveys, and interviews with local residents, architects, and builders to investigate the thermal performance and suitability of indigenous building materials in South Eastern Nigeria. The research aims to identify the potential benefits, challenges, and opportunities associated with incorporating these materials into contemporary building practices.

Key findings highlight the thermal properties of indigenous materials, including earth, bamboo, thatch, and timber, which possess inherent insulation, moisture regulation, and heat storage capabilities. These materials have been utilized by local communities for centuries, demonstrating their effectiveness in mitigating heat gain, promoting natural ventilation, and reducing energy consumption.

Furthermore, the study explores the socio-cultural factors influencing the acceptance and adoption of indigenous building materials in contemporary construction practices. It examines the economic feasibility, availability, and accessibility of these materials, as well as the need for capacity building and knowledge transfer to ensure their sustainable use.

The research concludes that integrating indigenous building materials into architectural design and construction practices in South Eastern Nigeria can significantly contribute to improving thermal comfort while respecting cultural heritage and promoting sustainable development. However, it also emphasizes the importance of careful material selection, structural design, and technological advancements to address potential limitations and ensure long-term durability and safety.

This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on sustainable building practices in hot, humid climates and provides insights for architects, engineers, policymakers, and researchers seeking to enhance thermal comfort while embracing local traditions and materials. Future research directions may involve investigating innovative construction techniques, optimizing material combinations, and evaluating the long-term environmental impact of indigenous building materials.
