IMPACT OF LECTURERS ATTITUDE TOWARDS COMMUNICATING WITH THE LIBRARIAN FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING IN THE UNIVERSITIES IN SOUTH-SOUTH NIGERIA

Abstract:
Effective teaching in universities relies on a multitude of factors, including the collaboration between lecturers and librarians. The present study investigates the impact of lecturers' attitudes towards communicating with librarians on effective teaching in universities located in the South-South region of Nigeria. The study aims to explore the extent to which lecturers' attitudes towards librarian collaboration influence their instructional practices and the overall quality of education in these institutions.

The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. The quantitative phase involves distributing questionnaires to lecturers across multiple universities in the South-South region to gather information about their attitudes towards librarian collaboration and their perceived effectiveness as educators. The qualitative phase includes interviews with a subset of lecturers and librarians to gain deeper insights into their experiences and perspectives regarding collaboration.

The findings of the study reveal the significance of positive attitudes and effective communication channels between lecturers and librarians. When lecturers actively engage with librarians, they can benefit from valuable resources, guidance, and support in curriculum development, instructional design, and information literacy integration. Furthermore, such collaboration can enhance students' access to relevant learning materials, foster critical thinking skills, and promote independent research.

On the other hand, negative attitudes towards librarian collaboration can hinder the effectiveness of teaching. Lack of communication and limited interaction between lecturers and librarians may result in suboptimal utilization of library resources, outdated instructional materials, and missed opportunities to incorporate information literacy skills into the curriculum.

This study emphasizes the importance of fostering a positive and collaborative atmosphere between lecturers and librarians in universities. It highlights the need for professional development programs that promote effective communication, mutual understanding, and shared goals. By recognizing the pivotal role of librarians in supporting teaching and learning, universities can leverage their expertise and resources to enhance the overall educational experience.

The research outcomes aim to provide insights for university administrators, lecturers, and librarians to facilitate positive change in their institutions. By fostering a culture of collaboration and effective communication, universities in South-South Nigeria can optimize teaching practices, improve student outcomes, and contribute to the advancement of higher education in the region.
