REMUNERATION MOTIVATIONAL VARIABLE AS DETERMINANT OF LECTURERS’ TURNOVER INTENTION IN COLLEGES OF EDUCATION, SOUTH-WEST, NIGERIA
Abstract:
Employee turnover remains a significant challenge faced by educational institutions worldwide, including colleges of education in South-West Nigeria. This study aims to explore the relationship between remuneration as a motivational variable and lecturers' turnover intention in the context of colleges of education.
The research utilizes a quantitative approach and employs a structured questionnaire to collect data from lecturers in colleges of education in the South-West region of Nigeria. A sample size of lecturers is selected using a stratified random sampling technique. The questionnaire measures lecturers' perceptions of remuneration, their motivational factors, and their intention to leave their current position.
The study utilizes descriptive statistics and inferential statistical techniques, including correlation analysis and regression analysis, to analyze the data and examine the relationships between remuneration, motivational factors, and turnover intention.
The results indicate that remuneration significantly influences lecturers' motivational factors and turnover intention. Higher levels of remuneration are positively associated with increased motivation and reduced turnover intention among lecturers. Furthermore, the study identifies specific components of remuneration, such as salary, benefits, and recognition, that have a significant impact on lecturers' motivation and intention to stay or leave.
The findings have implications for educational institutions and policymakers in Nigeria. Addressing lecturers' remuneration concerns and providing competitive compensation packages could enhance their motivation, improve job satisfaction, and reduce turnover intention. By implementing effective remuneration strategies, colleges of education can attract and retain high-quality lecturers, thereby improving the overall quality of education.
In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of remuneration as a motivational variable in influencing lecturers' turnover intention in colleges of education in South-West Nigeria. By understanding the relationship between remuneration, motivation, and turnover intention, educational institutions can develop targeted strategies to mitigate turnover and create a positive work environment for lecturers.
