Analysis of Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) of 2019 West African Senior School Certificate Examination Multiple-Choice Objective Tests in Economics

Abstract:
The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) plays a crucial role in assessing the academic performance of high school students in West Africa. One essential aspect of test quality is the reliability of the examination scores. The Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) is a statistical measure that provides an estimate of the precision and consistency of test scores. In the context of the 2019 WASSCE Multiple-Choice Objective Tests in Economics, this study aimed to analyze the SEM to evaluate the reliability and measurement error associated with the examination.

The research utilized a sample of students who took the Economics section of the 2019 WASSCE. The examination comprised multiple-choice objective questions designed to assess students' understanding of economic concepts and their ability to apply them in real-world scenarios. The SEM was calculated using established formulas and statistical techniques based on the test scores of the participants.

The analysis of the SEM provided valuable insights into the reliability of the test scores. A lower SEM indicates higher precision and consistency in the measurement of student abilities. The study examined factors that might contribute to the SEM, such as question difficulty, item discrimination, and test length. Additionally, the impact of SEM on the interpretation of students' performance levels was explored.

The results of the analysis revealed the magnitude of measurement error associated with the 2019 WASSCE Multiple-Choice Objective Tests in Economics. The SEM value indicated the degree of uncertainty in the test scores and highlighted areas where improvements in test design and administration could enhance the reliability of the examination.
