APPLICATION OF INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS IN COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES: WITH REFERENCE TO AN ACADEMIC LIBRARY IN MALAYSIA

Abstract:
This abstract provides an overview of the application of international standards in collection development strategies within an academic library in Malaysia. The aim of this study is to explore how international standards influence the collection development practices, policies, and procedures in the context of an academic library.

The collection development process plays a crucial role in academic libraries, as it ensures that information resources align with the learning, teaching, and research needs of the institution's academic community. International standards serve as a valuable framework for guiding collection development decisions, facilitating resource sharing, and promoting quality assurance in library services.

This research study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing interviews, document analysis, and observations to collect data. The study focuses on a specific academic library in Malaysia to provide a contextualized understanding of the application of international standards in collection development. Furthermore, it examines the challenges and benefits associated with incorporating international standards into the library's collection development strategies.

Preliminary findings suggest that the academic library under investigation has recognized the importance of international standards in achieving collection development goals. The library has adopted and adapted various international standards, such as ISO 11620:2014 (Information and documentation - Library performance indicators) and ISO 2789:2013 (Information and documentation - International library statistics) to enhance its collection management practices. These standards have assisted in improving the library's decision-making processes, resource allocation, and user satisfaction.

However, the study also reveals certain challenges in implementing international standards in the Malaysian academic library context. These challenges include limited awareness and understanding of international standards among library staff, budget constraints, and adapting standards to suit local needs and resources.

The research findings contribute to the existing body of knowledge on collection development strategies and the application of international standards in academic libraries. The study offers practical insights for library professionals in Malaysia and beyond, showcasing the potential benefits and challenges of integrating international standards into collection development practices.
