Assessment of Maintenance Strategies Adopted by Teachers and Technologists for Maintenance of Workshop Equipment in Technical Colleges of Taraba State, Nigeria

Abstract:
Technical colleges play a crucial role in providing vocational education and training to students, equipping them with essential skills for various industries. To ensure effective training, it is imperative that workshop equipment in these institutions are properly maintained and in good working condition. This study aims to assess the maintenance strategies adopted by teachers and technologists for workshop equipment maintenance in technical colleges located in Taraba State, Nigeria.

The research methodology employed a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. A survey questionnaire was administered to teachers and technologists in selected technical colleges across Taraba State to gather quantitative data on the maintenance strategies utilized. Additionally, interviews and focus group discussions were conducted to obtain qualitative insights into the challenges faced and the perception of maintenance practices.

The findings of the study revealed that teachers and technologists in Taraba State technical colleges employ a variety of maintenance strategies for workshop equipment. These strategies encompassed preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, and predictive maintenance. However, the study also identified several challenges hindering effective maintenance practices, including limited funding, inadequate technical expertise, and a lack of standardized maintenance procedures.

Based on the research findings, recommendations are proposed to enhance maintenance practices in technical colleges. These recommendations include the establishment of a dedicated maintenance budget, provision of continuous training and professional development for teachers and technologists, and the implementation of a comprehensive maintenance management system. It is anticipated that the adoption of these recommendations will contribute to improved maintenance practices, leading to enhanced functionality and longevity of workshop equipment in technical colleges.

This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by shedding light on the maintenance strategies employed by teachers and technologists in technical colleges within Taraba State, Nigeria. The findings can serve as a foundation for policymakers and educational institutions to develop targeted interventions aimed at improving the maintenance of workshop equipment, thus fostering a conducive learning environment for students pursuing technical education.
