Assessment of Smartphone Usage Among Students for Effective Learning During Covid-19 Pandemic Lockdown in Senior Secondary Schools in Ogun State, Nigeria
Abstract:
The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted traditional education systems worldwide, including in Ogun State, Nigeria. The implementation of lockdown measures to contain the spread of the virus has necessitated a shift towards remote learning and the utilization of digital technologies. This study aims to assess the usage of smartphones among senior secondary school students in Ogun State during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown and its impact on effective learning.
The research methodology involves a quantitative approach, utilizing a structured questionnaire administered to a sample of senior secondary school students in Ogun State. The questionnaire gathers data on smartphone ownership, frequency and duration of smartphone usage, types of educational applications utilized, challenges faced, and perceived effectiveness of smartphone-based learning.
Preliminary findings indicate a high prevalence of smartphone ownership among senior secondary school students in Ogun State during the pandemic lockdown. The majority of students reported frequent and prolonged smartphone usage for educational purposes. Educational applications were widely used, with students utilizing a diverse range of applications for various subjects and learning activities.
Several challenges associated with smartphone-based learning were identified, including limited internet connectivity, inadequate access to educational resources, and distractions from non-educational content. Despite these challenges, students generally perceived smartphone usage as an effective tool for learning during the lockdown, citing advantages such as flexibility, convenience, and the ability to access a wide range of learning materials.
The implications of this study suggest that smartphones can play a crucial role in facilitating effective learning during periods of educational disruption, such as the Covid-19 pandemic. However, addressing challenges related to internet connectivity, resource accessibility, and minimizing distractions is essential to maximize the educational benefits of smartphone-based learning.
The findings of this research contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the utilization of smartphones for education, particularly in the context of a pandemic-induced lockdown. The study provides insights for policymakers, educators, and other stakeholders to develop strategies that harness the potential of smartphones for effective learning, ensuring equitable access to quality education for all students in Ogun State, Nigeria, and beyond.
