ASSESSMENT OF STUDENTS’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS THE LEARNING OF BUILDING CONSTRUCTION TRADE IN GOVERNMENT TECHNICAL COLLEGES IN BAUCHI STATE
Abstract:
This study aimed to assess students' attitudes towards the learning of building construction trade in government technical colleges in Bauchi State. The construction industry plays a vital role in the economic development of any nation, and technical colleges are essential institutions for equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue careers in this field. However, students' attitudes towards learning can significantly impact their engagement and success in vocational education programs.
The research employed a quantitative approach, utilizing a survey questionnaire administered to a sample of students enrolled in building construction trade programs across government technical colleges in Bauchi State. The questionnaire consisted of items designed to measure students' attitudes towards various aspects of the learning process, including the curriculum, teaching methods, practical training opportunities, and perceived career prospects in the building construction industry.
Data analysis involved descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, such as correlation and regression analyses, to explore the relationships between different variables and students' attitudes towards learning building construction. Additionally, demographic factors such as gender, age, and prior exposure to the construction industry were considered as potential influencing factors.
The findings of the study revealed important insights into students' attitudes towards the learning of building construction trade. Overall, the results indicated a positive attitude among students, with a significant interest in practical training and hands-on experiences. However, some areas, such as curriculum relevance and career prospects, showed room for improvement.
The implications of the study suggest the need for curriculum enhancement, incorporating more real-world applications and industry-relevant content to increase students' motivation and engagement. Additionally, it is crucial to provide adequate practical training opportunities, apprenticeships, and internships to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
The research contributes to the existing literature on vocational education and provides valuable information for policymakers, educational institutions, and industry stakeholders to enhance the learning experience and better prepare students for the building construction trade workforce. Further research is recommended to investigate additional factors that may influence students' attitudes and explore potential interventions to address any identified challenges.
