TECHNICAL AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN NIGERIA: BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN POLICY AND PRACTICE

Abstract:
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) plays a crucial role in equipping individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge for gainful employment, economic development, and societal progress. In Nigeria, like many other developing countries, there exists a significant gap between the policy frameworks governing TVET and their effective implementation in practice. This abstract provides an overview of the challenges faced in bridging this gap and proposes potential strategies to enhance the alignment between policy and practice in Nigerian TVET.

The first section highlights the policy landscape of TVET in Nigeria, discussing key initiatives, frameworks, and government interventions aimed at promoting TVET. These include the National Policy on Education, establishment of vocational training centers, and collaboration with international organizations for capacity building.

The second section identifies the major challenges hindering the effective implementation of TVET policies in Nigeria. These challenges include inadequate funding, outdated curricula, insufficient infrastructure and equipment, limited industry collaboration, and a negative societal perception of vocational education.

The third section proposes strategies to bridge the gap between policy and practice. These strategies encompass multi-stakeholder collaboration involving government, industry, educational institutions, and civil society organizations. Key recommendations include increased investment in TVET, curriculum reform to align with industry needs, enhancement of infrastructure and equipment, promotion of apprenticeship and internship programs, and raising public awareness about the importance and benefits of TVET.

The abstract concludes by emphasizing that bridging the gap between policy and practice in Nigerian TVET requires sustained commitment and collaboration among all stakeholders. By addressing the challenges and implementing the proposed strategies, Nigeria can enhance the quality and relevance of TVET programs, improve the employability of graduates, and contribute to the overall socio-economic development of the nation.
