RELEVANCE OF SCHOOL PLANT AVAILABILITY AND FUNCTIONALITY ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN RIMI ZONAL EDUCATION QUALITY ASSURANCE, KATSINA STATE

Abstract:
The availability and functionality of school infrastructure, commonly referred to as the "school plant," play a crucial role in shaping students' academic performance. This study aims to examine the relevance of school plant availability and functionality on students' academic performance in senior secondary schools within the Rimi Zonal Education Quality Assurance in Katsina State.

The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A sample of senior secondary school students, teachers, and school administrators was selected using a stratified random sampling technique. Questionnaires were administered to students to assess their perception of the availability and functionality of various components of the school plant, including classrooms, libraries, laboratories, and recreational facilities. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers and school administrators to obtain a deeper understanding of their perspectives on the relationship between school plant availability and functionality and students' academic performance.

The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while the qualitative data were subjected to thematic analysis. The findings revealed that the availability and functionality of the school plant significantly influenced students' academic performance. Adequate and well-maintained classrooms, well-equipped libraries, functional laboratories, and appropriate recreational facilities were found to positively impact students' motivation, engagement, and overall academic achievement.

Furthermore, the study identified several challenges affecting school plant availability and functionality, including inadequate funding, poor maintenance culture, lack of instructional resources, and limited community involvement. The qualitative findings underscored the need for increased government support, community engagement, and policy interventions to enhance the availability and functionality of the school plant in the study area.

Based on the study's findings, recommendations were made to relevant stakeholders, including the government, school administrators, and the community. These recommendations included increased investment in school infrastructure, regular maintenance and upgrading of facilities, provision of instructional resources, and fostering community partnerships to support the improvement of the school plant.

In conclusion, this study highlights the critical role of school plant availability and functionality in influencing students' academic performance in senior secondary schools. It underscores the need for concerted efforts from various stakeholders to address the challenges hindering the availability and functionality of the school plant, ultimately fostering a conducive learning environment for improved academic outcomes.
