EXPLORING THE EFFECT OF TEACHING METHODS ON DEVELOPMENT OF AGRICULTURAL SKILLS FOR FOOD SECURITY: CASE STUDY OF COLLEGES OF EDUCATION IN NORTH-EAST REGION, NIGERIA

Abstract:
Ensuring food security is a critical challenge faced by many countries, especially in regions where agriculture plays a significant role in the economy. Nigeria, as a country heavily reliant on agriculture, particularly in the North-East region, recognizes the importance of equipping future agricultural professionals with the necessary skills to enhance food security. This study aims to explore the effect of teaching methods on the development of agricultural skills among students in Colleges of Education in the North-East region of Nigeria.

The research employs a case study approach, focusing on Colleges of Education in the North-East region due to their role in training future agricultural educators. The study investigates different teaching methods employed by instructors and their impact on the development of agricultural skills among students. It also assesses the students' perceptions of the effectiveness of various teaching methods in enhancing their agricultural knowledge and practical skills.

To gather data, a mixed-methods research design is utilized, combining qualitative and quantitative techniques. Surveys, interviews, and classroom observations are conducted to gather both subjective and objective data. The study examines factors such as instructional techniques, experiential learning opportunities, use of technology, and hands-on practical training.

The findings of this study contribute to the existing literature on agricultural education and provide insights into the effectiveness of various teaching methods in developing agricultural skills for food security. The research outcomes can inform policymakers, curriculum developers, and educators in designing effective teaching strategies that promote agricultural knowledge acquisition and skill development among future agricultural professionals.

Ultimately, the goal is to enhance the teaching and learning processes in Colleges of Education in the North-East region of Nigeria, leading to the production of skilled agricultural professionals who can contribute effectively to improving food security in the country.
