Challenges to Effective Utilization of Entrepreneurial Skills of Unemployed Graduates in Damaturu Yobe State, Nigeria

Abstract:
Unemployment among graduates remains a prevalent challenge in many developing countries, including Nigeria. This abstract highlights the challenges encountered in the effective utilization of entrepreneurial skills among unemployed graduates in Damaturu, Yobe State, Nigeria. The aim is to shed light on the factors hindering the successful application of entrepreneurial skills and suggest potential strategies to address these challenges.

The study employs a qualitative research design, utilizing interviews, surveys, and document analysis to gather relevant data. A purposive sampling technique is utilized to select unemployed graduates who possess entrepreneurial skills but are unable to utilize them effectively. The study focuses on Damaturu, the capital city of Yobe State, due to its significant unemployment rates and the potential for entrepreneurial development.

The findings reveal several challenges faced by unemployed graduates in utilizing their entrepreneurial skills. Firstly, limited access to capital and financial resources restricts their ability to start or expand businesses. Additionally, inadequate infrastructure, including unreliable electricity supply and poor transportation systems, poses significant hurdles to entrepreneurship. Moreover, a lack of access to market information and limited networking opportunities hinder the graduates' ability to connect with potential customers and suppliers.

Furthermore, the study identifies societal attitudes towards entrepreneurship as a challenge. Negative perceptions surrounding self-employment and the preference for white-collar jobs disincentivize graduates from pursuing entrepreneurial ventures. Moreover, the absence of comprehensive entrepreneurial education and training programs in higher institutions contributes to the insufficient development of requisite skills and knowledge.

To address these challenges, the study suggests several strategies. Firstly, the government and relevant stakeholders should establish and promote entrepreneurship-friendly policies, including access to finance schemes and infrastructure development initiatives. Secondly, there is a need to integrate comprehensive entrepreneurship education into the curriculum of higher institutions, equipping graduates with the necessary skills and mindset. Additionally, fostering a cultural shift towards entrepreneurship by raising awareness and changing societal attitudes will encourage more graduates to explore self-employment opportunities.

In conclusion, this abstract highlights the challenges faced by unemployed graduates in Damaturu, Yobe State, Nigeria, regarding the effective utilization of their entrepreneurial skills. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing issues such as limited access to capital, inadequate infrastructure, negative societal attitudes, and the absence of comprehensive entrepreneurial education. By implementing the suggested strategies, policymakers and relevant stakeholders can enhance the utilization of entrepreneurial skills among unemployed graduates, fostering economic growth and reducing unemployment rates in the region.
