COMPARATIVE EFFECT OF MODE OF ENTRY ON UNDERGRADUATES’ ACHIEVEMENT IN SCIENCE EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF KASHERE, GOMBE STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract:
This study examines the comparative effect of the mode of entry on the achievement of undergraduate students in science education programs at the Federal University of Kashere, Gombe State, Nigeria. The mode of entry refers to the method by which students gain admission into the university, such as through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) or Direct Entry (DE) qualifications.

The purpose of this research is to investigate whether there is a significant difference in the academic achievement of science education students based on their mode of entry. The study adopts a quantitative research design, utilizing data collected from academic records and examination results of undergraduate students in science education programs over a specific period.

The sample for this study comprises undergraduate students enrolled in science education programs at the Federal University of Kashere. The participants are divided into two groups: the UTME group, consisting of students admitted through the UTME process, and the DE group, comprising students admitted through Direct Entry qualifications.

Data analysis involves descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, specifically the independent samples t-test. The academic achievement of students in the two groups is compared based on their cumulative grade point averages (CGPAs) and performance in science education courses.

The findings of this study will provide insights into the influence of the mode of entry on the achievement of undergraduate students in science education programs. It will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on admission policies and their impact on students' academic performance. The results may have implications for university admissions policies and practices, as well as student support services aimed at enhancing the academic success of science education students.
