Effect of Cognitive Restructuring Counselling Techniques in Managing Chemistry Anxiety Among Senior Secondary School Students in Tambuwal Local Government, Sokoto State

Abstract:
Chemistry anxiety is a prevalent issue among students, particularly in the senior secondary school level, which can hinder their learning and academic performance. This study aims to investigate the effect of cognitive restructuring counselling techniques in managing chemistry anxiety among senior secondary school students in Tambuwal Local Government, Sokoto State.

The research design employed for this study is a pretest-posttest control group design. A sample of senior secondary school students from Tambuwal Local Government, Sokoto State, exhibiting symptoms of chemistry anxiety, were divided into two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group received cognitive restructuring counselling techniques, while the control group did not receive any specific intervention.

The intervention involved a series of counselling sessions focused on cognitive restructuring techniques, including identifying and challenging irrational thoughts and beliefs related to chemistry, replacing negative thoughts with positive and realistic ones, and developing effective coping strategies. The control group, on the other hand, received regular classroom instruction without any additional intervention.

Data were collected using the Chemistry Anxiety Scale (CAS), which measures the level of chemistry-related anxiety among students. The scale was administered to both groups as a pretest before the intervention and as a posttest after the intervention. The data were analyzed using appropriate statistical methods, including t-tests and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA).

The findings of this study will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the effectiveness of cognitive restructuring counselling techniques in managing chemistry anxiety among senior secondary school students. It is expected that the experimental group receiving cognitive restructuring counselling techniques will show a significant reduction in chemistry anxiety levels compared to the control group.

The implications of this study are significant for educators, school counselors, and policymakers in developing effective interventions to address chemistry anxiety among senior secondary school students. By employing cognitive restructuring counselling techniques, educators can help students overcome negative thoughts and beliefs associated with chemistry, promote positive learning experiences, and enhance academic performance.
