EFFECT OF VIDEO CLIPS AND STUDENTS’ ATTITUDE ON SENIOR SCHOOL STUDENT’ PERFORMANCE IN PHYSICS IN ILORIN, NIGERIA

Abstract:
This study investigates the impact of video clips and students' attitude on the performance of senior school students in physics in Ilorin, Nigeria. Physics education has always been a challenging subject for many students due to its abstract nature and complex theoretical concepts. Therefore, exploring innovative teaching methodologies and understanding the role of students' attitude towards learning physics is crucial for enhancing students' performance.

The study employs a mixed-methods approach, involving quantitative data collection through a pretest-posttest control group design as well as qualitative data collection through interviews and observations. The participants consist of senior school students from selected schools in Ilorin, Nigeria.

To assess the impact of video clips on students' performance, an experimental group is exposed to physics lessons supplemented with video clips, while a control group receives traditional classroom instruction. Pretest and posttest scores are collected from both groups to measure the improvement in students' performance.

Additionally, students' attitudes towards learning physics are assessed using a validated questionnaire. The questionnaire explores various dimensions of students' attitudes, including interest, motivation, confidence, and perceived relevance of physics to their lives.

The findings indicate that the use of video clips as a supplementary teaching tool significantly improves students' performance in physics compared to traditional instruction. The experimental group shows a higher mean score in the posttest compared to the control group. Moreover, students' attitudes towards learning physics are found to be positively correlated with their performance. Students with positive attitudes demonstrate higher levels of engagement, motivation, and interest in physics, leading to improved academic performance.

The study highlights the importance of incorporating multimedia resources, such as video clips, into physics education to enhance students' understanding and engagement. Furthermore, it emphasizes the need to cultivate positive attitudes towards physics among students through various means, including making connections to real-life applications and fostering intrinsic motivation.

The findings of this study have implications for educators, curriculum designers, and policymakers in Nigeria and beyond. It underscores the significance of employing student-centered instructional approaches that leverage multimedia resources and promote positive attitudes towards learning physics. By addressing these factors, educators can foster a conducive learning environment and facilitate better academic outcomes in physics education for senior school students in Ilorin, Nigeria.
