EFFECTS OF COMMUNAL CONFLICT ON AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY AND RESOLUTION STRATEGIES AMONG FARMING COMMUNITIES IN BENUE AND NASARAWA STATES

Abstract:
Communal conflicts have a significant impact on agricultural productivity in many regions around the world, including Benue and Nasarawa states in Nigeria. This abstract focuses on understanding the effects of communal conflict on agricultural productivity in these states and exploring potential resolution strategies adopted by farming communities.

Communal conflicts arise from various factors such as land disputes, resource scarcity, ethnic tensions, and political rivalries. These conflicts often result in the displacement of farmers, destruction of farmlands, and disruption of agricultural activities. As a consequence, agricultural productivity suffers, leading to food insecurity, economic instability, and social unrest within affected communities.

The effects of communal conflict on agricultural productivity are multi-faceted. Firstly, the destruction of farmlands and livestock reduces the overall agricultural output, leading to decreased yields and income for farmers. Secondly, the displacement of farmers disrupts the farming calendar, causing delays in planting and harvesting seasons. Thirdly, the fear of violence and insecurity discourages investments in agriculture, limiting the adoption of modern farming techniques and technologies.

To address these challenges, farming communities in Benue and Nasarawa states have implemented various resolution strategies. These strategies include the establishment of dialogue platforms, peace committees, and conflict mediation centers. These initiatives aim to promote reconciliation, enhance community-level dialogue, and facilitate peaceful coexistence among different ethnic and communal groups.

Furthermore, efforts have been made to provide support to affected farmers through the provision of agricultural inputs, training on conflict resolution and peacebuilding, and the promotion of alternative livelihood options. Additionally, government agencies and non-governmental organizations have collaborated to promote sustainable agriculture practices, improve access to credit facilities, and enhance infrastructure development in conflict-affected areas.

While these resolution strategies have shown some positive impact, challenges still exist. Limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and socio-cultural barriers hinder the effective implementation of these strategies. Additionally, the deep-rooted nature of communal conflicts requires a comprehensive approach involving political will, policy reforms, and long-term investments in peacebuilding and development.

In conclusion, communal conflicts have detrimental effects on agricultural productivity in Benue and Nasarawa states. However, through the adoption of various resolution strategies, farming communities have made efforts to mitigate the negative impacts. To achieve sustainable solutions, it is imperative to address the underlying causes of communal conflicts and promote inclusive development strategies that prioritize peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and agricultural productivity enhancement.
