ENTREPRENEURSHIP MANAGEMENT SKILLS NEEDED BY SELF-EMPLOYED MOTOR VEHICLE MECHANICS IN THE NORTH CENTRAL STATES OF NIGERIA

Abstract:
This abstract provides an overview of the entrepreneurship management skills required by self-employed motor vehicle mechanics in the North Central states of Nigeria. The study aims to identify and analyze the key skills that are essential for motor vehicle mechanics to successfully manage their businesses and thrive in the highly competitive automotive repair industry.

Motor vehicle mechanics play a vital role in the transportation sector, providing maintenance and repair services to ensure the smooth operation of vehicles. However, being skilled in mechanical repairs alone may not guarantee sustainable business success. Entrepreneurs in this field must possess a range of management skills to effectively run their enterprises.

This research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing interviews and surveys to gather data from self-employed motor vehicle mechanics operating in the North Central states of Nigeria. The collected data will be analyzed thematically to identify the most crucial entrepreneurship management skills needed for success in this specific context.

Preliminary findings suggest that self-employed motor vehicle mechanics require a diverse set of skills to manage their businesses effectively. These include financial management, marketing and customer relationship management, human resource management, business planning, and problem-solving abilities. Financial management skills are crucial for maintaining proper bookkeeping, managing cash flow, and making informed financial decisions. Effective marketing and customer relationship management skills enable mechanics to attract and retain customers in the highly competitive market. Human resource management skills are essential for hiring and managing employees, fostering a positive work environment, and enhancing productivity. Business planning skills aid in setting goals, developing strategies, and adapting to changing market dynamics. Lastly, problem-solving abilities are vital for troubleshooting complex mechanical issues and addressing operational challenges.

The implications of this study are significant for aspiring and existing self-employed motor vehicle mechanics in the North Central states of Nigeria. By understanding and developing these entrepreneurship management skills, mechanics can enhance their business acumen, improve competitiveness, and increase the likelihood of long-term success. Policymakers and training institutions can also utilize these findings to design targeted educational programs and support initiatives that equip motor vehicle mechanics with the necessary skills to thrive in the entrepreneurial environment.
