EFFECTS OF PAUSE PROCEDURE ON PERFORMANCE OF FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING STUDENTS IN COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, NIGERIA

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of the Pause Procedure on the performance of financial accounting students in a College of Education in Nigeria. The Pause Procedure is a teaching technique that involves incorporating deliberate pauses during instructional delivery to enhance learning retention and comprehension. The study aimed to determine whether the implementation of the Pause Procedure would lead to improved academic performance among financial accounting students.

A mixed-methods research design was employed, involving both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. A sample of financial accounting students was selected using a stratified random sampling technique. The students were divided into two groups: an experimental group that received instruction using the Pause Procedure, and a control group that received traditional instruction without the incorporation of pauses.

Quantitative data on students’ academic performance were obtained through pre-test and post-test measures, while qualitative data were collected through focus group discussions and interviews to gather students’ perceptions and experiences of the Pause Procedure.

The findings of the study revealed that the implementation of the Pause Procedure had a significant positive impact on the performance of financial accounting students. The experimental group, which received instruction with pauses, demonstrated higher mean scores in the post-test compared to the control group. Moreover, the qualitative data indicated that students perceived the Pause Procedure as beneficial in enhancing their understanding, retention, and engagement with the course content.

These results suggest that the Pause Procedure can be an effective instructional strategy for improving the academic performance of financial accounting students in a College of Education in Nigeria. The findings have implications for educators and instructional designers, highlighting the importance of incorporating strategic pauses during teaching to optimize learning outcomes.

Further research could explore the long-term effects of the Pause Procedure on students’ performance and investigate its applicability in other educational settings and disciplines. Additionally, future studies could delve into the specific factors that contribute to the effectiveness of the Pause Procedure, such as the optimal duration and frequency of pauses, and the influence of student characteristics on its efficacy.
