Abstract:
This abstract provides a brief overview of a study conducted on the maladaptive behavior of secondary school students in Imo State, Nigeria. The aim of the study was to explore the various maladaptive behaviors exhibited by secondary school students in the region and to identify the underlying factors contributing to such behaviors.

The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. A sample of secondary school students was drawn from various schools in Imo State, and data was collected using standardized questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The sample consisted of both male and female students.

The findings revealed a range of maladaptive behaviors among secondary school students in Imo State. These behaviors included aggression, substance abuse, bullying, truancy, and academic underachievement. The study also identified several contributing factors, such as peer influence, family dysfunction, socio-economic challenges, and inadequate school support systems.

Additionally, gender differences in maladaptive behavior were observed, with male students exhibiting higher levels of aggression and substance abuse compared to their female counterparts. The qualitative interviews provided deeper insights into the experiences and perceptions of the students, shedding light on the underlying reasons behind their maladaptive behaviors.

The implications of these findings are significant for educators, policymakers, and parents in Imo State. It highlights the need for comprehensive intervention strategies that address the underlying causes of maladaptive behaviors, including targeted support programs, counseling services, and parental involvement. By addressing these factors, it is hoped that the well-being and academic performance of secondary school students in Imo State can be improved.

In conclusion, this study sheds light on the maladaptive behaviors exhibited by secondary school students in Imo State, Nigeria. It underscores the importance of understanding the underlying factors contributing to these behaviors and developing appropriate interventions to support the students. Further research in this area is warranted to explore additional factors and to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of intervention programs.
