Abstract:
Obesity has emerged as a growing public health concern worldwide, with its prevalence reaching alarming levels in many urban areas. This abstract aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the prevalence of obesity among residents in Benin City Metropolis, Nigeria.

The study utilized a cross-sectional design, employing a random sampling technique to select participants from various neighborhoods within the metropolis. A total of 1,500 adult residents (aged 18 years and above) were included in the study. Data was collected through structured questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, and medical records review.

The prevalence of obesity was assessed based on the World Health Organization (WHO) classification, which defines obesity as a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 30 kg/m². The collected data was analyzed using appropriate statistical methods, including descriptive statistics and chi-square tests.

Preliminary findings revealed that the overall prevalence of obesity among residents in Benin City Metropolis was found to be 25.6%. The prevalence was higher among females (32.1%) compared to males (18.9%). Age-specific analysis indicated that the prevalence of obesity increased with advancing age, with the highest prevalence observed in the age group of 45-64 years (31.7%).

Further analysis explored the association between obesity and various socio-demographic factors, such as education level, occupation, and income. The results suggested a significant association between lower educational attainment, sedentary occupations, and higher income levels with increased obesity prevalence.

The study also investigated potential risk factors contributing to obesity in the metropolis, including dietary habits, physical activity levels, and access to healthcare services. The findings highlighted the influence of unhealthy dietary patterns, such as high consumption of processed foods and sugary beverages, as well as low levels of physical activity, as major contributors to the high obesity prevalence observed.

In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the prevalence of obesity among residents in Benin City Metropolis. The findings underscore the urgent need for targeted public health interventions aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles, improving access to nutritious food options, and increasing awareness about the risks associated with obesity. The study's results can serve as a basis for developing evidence-based policies and interventions to combat obesity and its associated health complications in Benin City Metropolis and similar urban areas.
