INFLUENCE OF COGNITIVE PEDAGOGICAL CHALLENGES ON SOFT SKILLS ACQUISITION OF BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS IN BENUE STATE UNIVERSITIES

ABSTRACT

This research project aims to investigate the influence of cognitive pedagogical challenges on the acquisition of soft skills among business education students in universities located in Benue State, Nigeria. Soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking, are essential for the success of business professionals in today’s dynamic and competitive work environment. However, cognitive pedagogical challenges, including instructional methods, curriculum design, and assessment practices, may impact the development and acquisition of these skills. This study seeks to explore the specific cognitive pedagogical challenges faced by business education students in Benue State universities and their influence on the acquisition of soft skills.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, utilizing surveys, interviews, and observation techniques to collect data from business education students, faculty members, and administrators in universities in Benue State. The research objectives include identifying the cognitive pedagogical challenges encountered by business education students, examining their influence on the acquisition of soft skills, and proposing strategies for addressing these challenges to enhance skill development.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the influence of cognitive pedagogical challenges on the acquisition of soft skills among business education students in Benue State universities. The research will identify specific challenges related to instructional methods used in the classroom, such as lecture-based teaching, lack of active learning opportunities, and limited use of experiential learning approaches. It will also explore curriculum design issues, including outdated or irrelevant content and a lack of integration of real-world scenarios and industry practices. Furthermore, the study will examine assessment practices that may not adequately measure and promote the development of soft skills.

The implications of this research extend to business education students, faculty members, administrators, and policymakers in Benue State universities. The findings will provide business education students with an understanding of the cognitive pedagogical challenges that may influence their acquisition of soft skills. Faculty members and administrators can utilize the research findings to identify and address these challenges, designing and implementing pedagogical strategies that facilitate the development of soft skills. Policymakers can utilize the research findings to inform policies and initiatives that promote effective teaching and learning practices, ensuring the integration of soft skills development in the business education curriculum.
