SELF-CONCEPT AND SELF-EFFICACY AS DETERMINANTS OF COLLEGES OF EDUCATION STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE IN SHORTHAND IN NORTH-EAST, NIGERIA
Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the influence of self-concept and self-efficacy on the performance of Colleges of Education students in shorthand within the North-East region of Nigeria. Shorthand is a vital skill for aspiring educators, and understanding the factors that contribute to students' performance in this subject is essential for enhancing educational outcomes.
The research adopts a quantitative approach and employs a descriptive survey design. A sample of Colleges of Education students from the North-East region of Nigeria will be selected using a stratified random sampling technique. The study will utilize standardized questionnaires to measure students' self-concept, self-efficacy, and academic performance in shorthand. Data collected will be analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques, including correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis.
The study anticipates that self-concept, defined as an individual's beliefs and perceptions about their own abilities and worth, will have a significant impact on students' performance in shorthand. Additionally, self-efficacy, which refers to individuals' beliefs in their ability to successfully perform specific tasks, is expected to be positively associated with shorthand performance. The findings will provide valuable insights into the role of self-concept and self-efficacy in shaping students' performance in shorthand and inform educators and policymakers about strategies to enhance students' learning experiences and outcomes.
The implications of this study are significant for educational institutions in the North-East region of Nigeria, as it will shed light on the factors influencing students' performance in shorthand. By understanding the role of self-concept and self-efficacy, colleges of education can develop targeted interventions and support systems to promote students' confidence, motivation, and engagement in shorthand learning. This research will contribute to the existing literature on educational psychology, specifically in the context of shorthand education, and provide a basis for future research in related areas.
