INFLUENCE OF FARMERS’ EDUCATION ON THEIR SOCIO-ECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS, VULNERABILITY AND CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE IN SOKOTO STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract:
This study investigates the influence of farmers' education on their socio-economic characteristics, vulnerability, and causes of climate change in Sokoto State, Nigeria. The aim is to understand how educational attainment among farmers relates to their socio-economic status, their susceptibility to climate change impacts, and their understanding of climate change causes.
The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A sample of farmers from different communities in Sokoto State is selected, and data is collected regarding their education levels, socio-economic characteristics, vulnerability to climate change, and perceptions of climate change causes. Statistical analyses are conducted to examine the relationship between educational attainment and various socio-economic factors, vulnerability indicators, and climate change perceptions.
Preliminary findings suggest that farmers with higher education levels tend to have better socio-economic characteristics, including higher income levels, improved access to resources, and increased diversification of livelihood strategies. Additionally, educated farmers exhibit a higher level of awareness and understanding of climate change causes, such as greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation, compared to their less-educated counterparts.
Furthermore, the study reveals that farmers with lower levels of education are more vulnerable to climate change impacts, experiencing challenges such as decreased agricultural productivity, water scarcity, and increased pest prevalence. These vulnerabilities are attributed to limited knowledge and access to climate-smart agricultural practices, financial resources, and adaptation strategies.
The results of this study have important implications for policy and interventions aimed at addressing climate change adaptation and mitigation in Sokoto State. Enhancing farmers' education and promoting climate change awareness can contribute to improved socio-economic conditions, increased resilience, and enhanced capacity to cope with climate change impacts. It is recommended that educational programs be developed to provide farmers with knowledge and skills related to climate-smart agriculture, sustainable resource management, and climate change adaptation measures.
